If you like to enjoy the sky while you’re out at night or at home, you’ll have a “different and rare” opportunity this week. Comet Nishimura, discovered exactly a month ago by Japanese astronomer Hideo Nishimura, will be visible to the naked eye in the coming days, an hour after sunset in Portugal.
“Will Comet Nishimura become visible to the naked eye? Given the unpredictability of comets, no one can say for sure, but for now it seems like a good bet,” reads a note published on NASA’s official website.
In accordance with Sky News, Astrophysicist Brad Gibson quotes this as a rare and unique opportunity, noting that the use of binoculars will make the experience even more special.
Since its discovery, Nishimura’s brightness has increased and its trajectory has been tracked. This Tuesday it will make its closest approach, being 125 million kilometers from planet Earth.
However, according to astrophysicist Brad Gibson, on average comet sightings occur once every decade.
