Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro underwent two more operations on Tuesday at the Vila Nova Star hospital in the southern city of Sao Paulo, where he usually receives treatment. According to lawyer and adviser Fabio Weingarten, both operations took place without incident and were “as calm as possible.”
According to it and a medical bulletin published by the hospital, Bolsonaro underwent surgery to correct a deviated nasal septum that was making it difficult to breathe, as well as another surgery to correct a hiatal hernia that was causing digestive problems. Because of the latter problem, the former president complained of reflux, constant bouts of hiccups and a dry, persistent cough, which greatly bothered him.
Neither Weingarten nor the hospital have addressed the third operation, announced a few days ago, which, at least in theory, will be the most important and most urgent. This third procedure, scheduled for this Tuesday, aims to restore normality to the intestinal loops that again obstruct Bolsonaro’s digestive tract and cause acute pain in moments of crisis.
After being stabbed on September 6, 2018, while campaigning for the Brazilian presidency, Jair Bolsonaro had to undergo five surgeries to repair intestinal loops. These interventions resolved the situation for a while, but then the problem returned, especially because Bolsonaro himself did not cooperate, sticking to a diet based on fried foods, sandwiches, snacks and soft drinks, which made the situation worse.
Tuesday’s operations lasted approximately four hours, starting at 5:00 a.m. local time, 9:00 a.m. in Lisbon, and ending around 9:00 a.m. in Brazil and 1:00 p.m. in Portugal.
At the end of the day, the medical commission accompanying Bolsonaro will assess the former president’s health and, possibly, a decision will be made at that time on whether and when the operation on the intestinal loops that led to his hospitalization will be carried out. but in the end it was not implemented. .
