The government will come up with a proposal to include in the Criminal Code a new crime related to causing harm to the physical integrity of employees of law enforcement agencies and services, he said in an interview with the publication on Tuesday CMTV Minister of the Interior José Luis Carneiro. The goal, he said, is to increase the minimum and maximum prison sentences applicable to this type of aggression.
The new crime of violent acts against agents of the security forces and services in the performance of their functions will be punishable by one to four years in prison and will be enshrined in a diploma, which is being developed jointly by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Administration and the Ministry of Justice, said José Luis Carneiro.
In practice, we are talking about increasing by one year the minimum and maximum limits of punishment provided for the crime of simple assault on physical integrity, currently punishable by imprisonment for a term of up to three years.
If these crimes against the physical integrity of members of the Forces and Services are committed under particularly reprehensible circumstances, then the punishment becomes imprisonment from one to five years (instead of the current “up to four years”).
According to the Minister of Internal Affairs, one of the tasks is to ensure that the investigation into the practice of this type of crime is classified as urgent.
GO TO PARLIAMENT
The proposal, aimed at increasing prison sentences for attackers of police officers and security guards, still needs to be approved by the Council of Ministers and then sent to parliament for a vote by MPs.
BODYCAMS PROVES
The images collected by the approximately 10,000 “body cameras” that will be used by PSP agents are aimed at protecting citizens, but will also serve as evidence in the event of possible crimes against law enforcement officers.
