The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will speak this Wednesday at the UN Security Council climate summit and high-level open debate on Ukraine in New York.
The head of state arrived in the United States on Sunday evening and spoke on Tuesday on the first day of general debate of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
This Wednesday, his agenda includes speaking at the Climate Ambition Summit and a high-level Security Council open debate on “maintaining peace and security in Ukraine.”
At the end of the day, the President of the Republic will hold a meeting with Portuguese officials at the UN, at the Permanent Mission of Portugal to the UN.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa addressed the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, calling on world leaders to move from promises to action in reforming the organization, particularly its Security Council, and global financial institutions.
“We promise year after year. The time has come to fulfill it,” said the head of state.
“If this is not the case, we will continue to hear the same people, many of them very powerful, making promises and not keeping them – and we will understand why people have less and less faith in those who govern them,” he warned .
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was the eighth head of state to speak on the first day of the annual general debate between the heads of state and government of the 193 UN member states.
This year’s general debate between world leaders will be the second since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 last year, kicking off a war that has lasted more than a year and a half.
In his speech in Portuguese, which lasted twelve minutes, the President of the Republic stated that the struggle of the Ukrainian people against the invasion is inseparable from the demand for respect for the Charter of the United Nations.
The 78th session of the UN General Assembly is dedicated to the theme “Restoring trust and reviving global solidarity: accelerating action to achieve the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all people.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza arrived in the United States on Sunday evening, where he will stay until Friday.
In New York, both the President of the Republic and Foreign Minister João Gomes Cravinho scheduled bilateral meetings to, among other things, promote Portugal’s candidacy for a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the two-year period. 2027-2028
During this week, the head of state will also hold meetings with representatives of Portuguese emigrant communities in the North American states of New York and New Jersey.
