Vladimir Zelensky called this Wednesday for an end to Russia’s veto power in the UN Security Council during an open debate in the aforementioned UN body on the conflict in Ukraine.
In statements cited by the agency, the Ukrainian president spoke of the need to “reform the UN Security Council” in the name of “the pursuit of peace.” Reuters.
Considering the complexity of reforming the structure of the UN bodies themselves, Vladimir Zelensky proposed to bypass the veto power, giving the General Assembly the power to override the veto of one of the five permanent members (Russia, UN (USA, China, France and UK) by a qualified majority).
Moreover, he proposed that when one of these countries “resorts to aggression against another country in violation of the UN Charter,” it should be suspended from the Security Council for a certain period of time.
Vladimir Zelensky also considered that helping Ukraine with weapons and imposing sanctions against Russia are ways to “protect the UN Charter.”
