UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said this Wednesday that evidence of “shocking violations” of human rights during the war in Ukraine, mostly committed by Russia, has been documented, stressing that this documentation will be “vital” for future accountability.
During an open debate at the United Nations (UN) Security Council on the conflict in Ukraine, Guterres pointed out that evidence of sexual violence, arbitrary arrests and summary executions – “mainly by the Russian Federation” – was also collected by UN agencies, and The forced relocation of Ukrainian citizens, including children, to Russian-controlled territory or to the Russian Federation has also been recorded.
“This documentation is vital for accountability. Accountability for all human rights violations is critical in accordance with international norms and standards,” Guterres emphasized in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
