Ethnic Armenians in the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan agreed to a proposed ceasefire this Wednesday, 24 hours after the country launched an offensive to take control of the region that has left dozens dead and hundreds wounded.
According to Reuters, Armenian separatist forces in Karabakh said Azerbaijan had broken through its positions and taken control of a number of strategic heights and transport links while the world stood by and did nothing.
The so-called “Republic of Artsakh” said that in these circumstances it had no choice but to cease fire from 13:00 local time (10:00 Lisbon time) this Wednesday.
“The authorities of the Republic of Artsakh accept the proposal of the command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent for a ceasefire,” he said.
“Through the mediation of the command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh, an agreement was reached on a complete cessation of hostilities from 13:00 on September 20, 2023.”
Azerbaijan launched an operation against Nagorno-Karabakh on Tuesday after several soldiers were killed in what Baku said were attacks emanating from the mountainous region, which Azerbaijan has been blockading for nine months, according to Reuters.
Internationally, Nagorno-Karabakh is known as part of Azerbaijan.
