“The war in Ukraine has heightened geopolitical tensions and divisions, threatening regional stability, increasing the nuclear threat and opening deep cracks in an increasingly multipolar world,” Guterres said.
The UN leader also warned the warring parties that the war crimes committed were “documented”, including evidence of “shocking human rights violations” mainly committed by Russia.
According to Guterres, UN agencies have collected “evidence of sexual violence, arbitrary arrests and summary executions, as well as the forced transfer of Ukrainian civilians, including children, into territory under Russian control or into the Russian Federation,” stressing that this documentation “will have vital” for future accountability.

The prime minister of Albania, the country that holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council, exchanged sharp words with Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya after he objected to Zelensky’s speech. “This speech about breaking the rules is impressive,” said Edi Rama, adding: “We have a good solution. You will stop the war, and President Zelensky will no longer need to give speeches.”
