The Russian Foreign Minister said this Wednesday that Russia’s veto power in the UN Security Council is “absolutely legitimate” during an open debate in the UN body on the conflict in Ukraine.
After the Ukrainian president called for an end to Russia’s veto power, Sergei Lavrov said that even when this tool is used, “there are resolutions that can be applied, but this does not happen.”
The Russian minister also emphasized that “the United States does not comply with many resolutions.”
“Russia defended the UN Charter,” the “legacy” of which the West “ignores,” said Lavrov, who also criticized the EU and NATO for what he said were sabotaging the Minsk agreements.
“It was the West that fomented the rebellion” and “always refused to negotiate a solution to the problem in the light of the United Nations Charter,” he noted.
Lavrov further stated that “the US has invested in having Ukraine led by a person with pro-Western ideas.”
