Mozambican police have arrested 10 suspects in the robbery and murder of motorcycle taxi drivers in Tete province in central Mozambique, a corporate source told Lusa this Friday.
The men were detained between Tuesday and Wednesday and were in possession of seven motorcycles. Of the 10 suspects, three “committed robberies, and the remaining seven were [entre outros]middlemen in the sale of motorcycles,” said Feliciano da Camara, spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Tete.
“They threatened the victims and stole their motorcycles, in some cases the attacks ended in death,” the spokesman said, adding that some of the arrested men killed two people in the Matundo and Chingoji districts of the province.
The police response came after the Mozambique National Resistance (Renamo) announced on Wednesday the death of the party’s former Youth League president in the Matundo district of Tete following a robbery on Saturday.
According to Renamo, a group of unknown persons stole a motorcycle and money from Salifo Selemane, whose body was found with signs of violence.
Mozambican police said the two people killed, one of whom was in Matundo, also showed signs of violence and their motorcycles were among those seized along with 10 suspects detained.
Renamo’s spokesman in Tete, Nuno Zacarias, raised the possibility that the killing was politically motivated, but left it up to police to clarify the matter.
The victim, Salifo Selemane, was the president of the Renamo Youth League in the Matundo region in 2018.
