An American teacher was fired after she read an eighth-grade adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank that contained passages about sexuality. The incident occurred in Texas in early September.
According to the newspaper Washington Post, this version of the book would not have been approved by the Hamshire-Fannett school group. The teacher, who has not been publicly named, was replaced due to “concerns about the selection of books for a reading lesson.”
The work, titled “Graphic Adaptation,” includes passages written by young Anna about female and male genitalia and possible attraction to women. The full version of the book was removed from schools in Texas and Florida this year after parents complained about its sexual content. Some conservatives called it “too pornographic.”
Previous versions of Frank’s Diary omitted parts in which the teenager wrote about her sexuality. In one of the passages, which was published in Graphic Adaptation, Anna describes male and female genital organs. In another, she finds herself fascinated by statues of naked women.
Although the group said the graphic adaptation was never approved, this version of “The Diary of Anne Frank” was on a reading list sent to parents at the beginning of the school year. An investigation was launched in this regard.
“Graphic Adaptation”, released in 2018, was written by Ari Folman based on the complete version of “The Diary of Anne Frank”. It was highly acclaimed by critics and described New York Times book review as “attractive”.
The adaptation, endorsed by the Anne Frank Foundation, illustrates the hope and despair the young woman felt as she holed up with her family in an annexe in Amsterdam.
Still according to Washington Post, In August 2022, the Keller Independent School District in North Texas removed more than 40 books from its libraries and classrooms that were opposed by parents. These include an illustrated version of Anne Frank’s diary and the Bible.
