Nurse Lucy Letby, jailed for life for killing seven babies at the hospital where she worked, will face a new trial accused of trying to kill another newborn, according to British prosecutors quoted Reuters.
Lethby, 33, was convicted in August of killing seven babies at the Countess of Cheuster Hospital in northern England and attempting to kill six more children in 2015 and 2016.
Jurors were unable to reach an agreement on six counts of attempted murder involving five other babies, according to Reuters.
At a hearing at Manchester Crown Court, the Crown Prosecution Service announced it would order a new trial on one of the charges, tentatively set for next year.
“These decisions about whether to pursue new trials on the remaining attempted murder charges were extremely complex and difficult,” said Chief Crown Prosecutor Jonathan Storer.
“We listened carefully to the views of the affected families, the police and the prosecution lawyer before reaching our conclusions,” he added.
Earlier this month, Lucy Letby’s lawyers applied for permission to appeal her life sentence.
According to ReutersPolice are also continuing to review four thousand other hospital admissions where Lethby worked to see if there were other possible victims, while the British government will investigate the case, taking into account allegations by senior doctors who are concerned a nurse was not heard by bosses hospitals.
