The Cape Verdean Minister of Family, Integration and Social Development said this Monday that about 80% of Cape Verdeans have access to at least one social benefit and that the government wants to achieve universal protection services.
“About 80% of Cape Verdeans have access to at least one type of social protection service, which is a very important and very good achievement in the process of universalization of services,” Fernando Elisio Freire said in Praia at a seminar on sectoral statistics. .
As an example, the minister pointed to an increase in the minimum pension by 2,000 for an additional 3,000 recipients during 2023.
However, the government official stressed that the number of people paying into the social security system needs to be increased.
“At the moment, about 45% of working Cape Verdeans are not yet registered in the social security system,” and this part “we must introduce into the system so that they can have access to basic social security services,” stated .
From Monday to Friday, Cape Verde will host the fourth phase of the course on social protection statistics, an initiative of the Action Portugal project, which brings together government organizations from Cape Verde, Portugal, and the International Labor Organization (ILO).
The Minister of Family, Integration and Social Development recalled that the project’s first course on social protection statistics was held in Cape Verde in 2018, challenging countries to consolidate statistics in this area into a single document. .
Following successive phases of development, Cape Verde released its first national statistical bulletin in 2022, compiling indicators for the country’s entire social protection system, covering both fee-based and non-payer regimes, for the period 2016 to 2020.
