The President of the Assembly of the Republic will take part in Dublin from Thursday to Friday at the European Conference of Presidents of Parliaments of the Council of Europe, where he will deliver a speech on the challenges of representative democracies.
Augusto Santos Silva will attend a pre-conference on hate speech and acts of violence against elected officials in representative democracies at the Dublin Convention Center on Thursday morning.
The official opening of the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament of the Council of Europe begins immediately after the speech of the President of the Irish House of Representatives, Seán Ó Fearghail, the President of the Irish Senate, Senator Gerry Buttimer and the Secretary General. The first topic of discussion will be the consequences of “Russian military aggression against Ukraine and the role of national parliaments in the restoration of Ukraine.” At this stage, among other speakers, the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, will take the floor.
A debate on “the challenges of representative democracies in times of instability” will begin mid-day on Thursday, with speakers from Augusto Santos Silva, as well as the President of the French National Assembly, Yael Braun-Pivet, and the Estonian Parliament, Lauri Hussar.
The first of the two days of the conference ends with a dinner hosted by the Presidents of the Irish House of Representatives and Senate.
Early Friday morning, before the conference concludes, issues such as “equality in diversity in public representation, participation of youth, women, ethnic and social groups as members of parliament” will be discussed.
