Only 15 of 388 teacher candidates were selected for the rental support program and were allocated 11 apartments in Lisbon and the Algarve, the Ministry of Education said.
According to the list of teachers published this Wednesday on the website of the Directorate General of School Administration (DGAE), eight teachers have been selected for apartments in Portimão and another seven in Lisbon.
In a statement, the Department of Education said 15 teachers were allocated 11 apartments between T0 and T4 under a rental support program between DGAE and the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU).
However, the number of teachers selected is significantly less than the number of candidates (388) and also less than the total number of registered apartments, which will be 14 in Lisbon and 15 in Portimão.
The 29 houses registered between DGAE and IHRU were for both displaced teachers and health workers, but the Education Minister himself mentioned this number when he spoke about supporting the accommodation of displaced teachers without specifying how many houses would be available for them.
The Lusa agency addressed this issue to the Ministry of Education, but has not yet received a response.
In a statement sent to the editor, the supervisory authority only states that, in accordance with the regulations for the selection conditions and hierarchy of teacher candidates, “there were no exceptions.”
“The Ministry of Education, through the DGAE, is in touch with all those who, having been placed in these Teacher Zone Tables, applied but were not appointed,” he adds.
The executive director also adds that a four-storey building owned by the Pension Fund of the Ministry of Education will soon be delivered in Lisbon, as announced last week by Minister João Costa.
