Brazilian President Lula da Silva, 77, will undergo hip replacement this Friday in Brasilia, a surgical procedure aimed at correcting necrosis of the head of the right femur that has caused him pain for several months. After the operation, Lulu will need to be hospitalized for four to five days and then will recover for another three weeks at his official residence, Palacio da Alvorada, also in Brazil’s federal capital.
The operation, which will last about two hours, will take place at the Cirio Libanes de Brasilia Hospital, a modern private hospital in the country’s capital. A team of 20 renowned doctors and other medical professionals from the group’s headquarters, the Cirio Libanes hospital in Sao Paulo, traveled specifically to Brasilia to assist the president so that he would not have to travel between the two cities after the operation.
In July, Lula underwent two procedures at Cirio Libanes in Sao Paulo to relieve pain. First, he underwent infiltration at the site of necrosis, and a few days later, in the same hospital, he underwent denervation, a procedure that involves deactivating some of the nerve endings in the affected area.
In the first three weeks after surgery, Lula will travel with ministers and advisers from the Palacio da Alvorada, where a temporary presidential office has been set up. After this period, during which he will have to move around the official residence using a walker, Lula will return to his schedule at the Palácio do Planalto, the headquarters of the President of the Republic, but will not be able to travel for another three weeks. until he fully recovers.
Lula’s advisers estimate he will only resume the international travel that marked the first year of his third term in office at the end of November. Meanwhile, Brazil’s veteran president is due to travel to the United Arab Emirates to attend the COP28 environmental summit, and on his return to Brazil he will stop in Germany to implement the country’s new official agenda.
