Lula da Silva, who had this Friday afternoon two operations on his hip and his eyes at the Sirio Libanes Hospital in Brasília, is recovering well and this Saturday he has already taken a few steps around the room in this private medical unit. Anxious and unable to sit still as is his wont, Brazil’s 77-year-old veteran president has defied doctors’ advice and is already moving more than expected.
A few hours after the operation, on Friday, Lula already insisted on getting up and managed to do so, and this Saturday he began to walk, leaning on it and not making excessive efforts. So the medical team decided to speed up the start of physical therapy, and Lula also began doing exercises that would speed up his recovery.
That Friday, Lula spent about five hours in the operating room after undergoing a total hip replacement, a procedure to install a prosthesis on the head of the femur. He then underwent blepharoplasty, surgery to remove excess skin that had accumulated in his eyes over the years, an operation that was not made public and which surprised the press, who had been waiting at the hospital for news of the hip surgery, the only one that had been announced in advance.
The politician is expected to remain in hospital until Monday or Tuesday and then continue his recovery at the Palacio da Alvorada, the presidential residence in Brasilia, for about three weeks. During this period, Lula will not be able to travel to Palacio do Planalto, the headquarters of the Brazilian President, and will leave Alvorada, where he will have to use a walker.
