The general secretary of the CGTP considered it “natural” this Saturday for the mobilization of thousands of people “suffocated” by rising housing costs, arguing that banks should support rising interest rates.
“It is natural that thousands of people are mobilizing, just as thousands of workers, pensioners and pensioners are mobilizing, because the cost of housing cannot be afforded, in addition to the increasing cost of living, which, with low wages and pensions, is strangling the lives of families,” – defended Isabel Camarinha in a conversation with the Lusa agency during the demonstration for the right to housing and climate justice, which took place in Lisbon.
Therefore, the trade union center demands respect for the right to housing, changes in laws so that there are no evictions and that the cost of rent takes into account the income of workers and their families.
According to Intersindical, it is the banks that must withstand the rise in interest rates, which affects the payments of families on mortgage loans.
“The five largest banks earned 10 million euros in profit per day in the first half of 2023,” he noted.
Therefore, as he noted, it is unjustified to continue to demand that workers and their families support the increase in interest rates adopted by the European Central Bank (ECB).
The CGTP leader also believes that leader António Costa needs to pay attention to the situation the country is in, stressing that “the wealth produced is enough to guarantee a decent life for everyone, but it needs to be distributed differently.” .
The Casa para Viver and Their Time to Pay platforms held a series of demonstrations this Saturday for the right to housing and climate justice.
Protests began this morning in Barreiro, Beja, Évora, Portalegre and Tavira.
In the afternoon, in addition to Lisbon, demonstrations took place in Porto, Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, Covilha, Guimarães, Lagos, Leiria, Portimão, Viseu, Zamora Correia and Alcácer do Sale.
