The interior minister on Thursday denied that the capital’s public security police units of Lisbon and Porto have no commanders, as the Professional Police Union Association reported on Wednesday.
“In the capital commands of Lisbon and Porto there are commanders who perform duties, replacing those who were supposed to perform duties in the national leadership. They will take office at the appropriate time,” José Luis Carneiro told reporters on the sidelines of the awards ceremony. to celebrate the award of a contract for the procurement of 81 bushfire fighting vehicles as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The minister was questioned by journalists after the Association of the Professional Police Union (ASPP/PSP) expressed regret that the PSP capital commands in Lisbon and Porto, the two largest in the country, were left without commanders, despite the fact that they had already been appointed a year ago.
The governor said it “will not be many days before the new commanders take over,” who will “take office as soon as they receive official sanction” to hold the status of chief superintendent.
“They must be authorized to spend, particularly for the duties of chief superintendents, which is a professional category that allows them to take on command responsibilities,” he said.
ASPP President Paulo Santos believed that in Lisbon, the country’s largest team, the situation is more serious, since the number two is on vacation.
The changes in the PSP metropolitan command in Lisbon and Porto came after José Barros Correia took office as the new director of the Public Security Police and selected Paulo Pereira, former commander of Lisbon, as national inspector and Paulo Peneda, former commander of the Public Security Police. Porto, as Deputy National Director of Human Resources, taking office on September 22.
On 8 September, Pedro Neto Gouveia was appointed commander of the Porto Metropolitan Command of the PSP, and Fiaíns Fernandez was appointed two days later as commander of the Metropolitan Command of the Lisbon Public Security Police.
