The National Assembly of Angola will hold an extraordinary plenary session this Saturday to consider the proposal for the resignation of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, presented on Thursday by UNITA (the largest opposition party).
The plenary schedule was announced on Friday following a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Angolan National Assembly.
The initiative of the parliamentary group of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) was publicly announced in July this year, presenting as a basis a serious violation of the Constitution of the Republic for attacks on the democratic rule of law. by undermining the rules of budget execution, the market economy and the republican system, as well as corruption, waste, abuse of influence and repeated cronyism.
The document of about 100 pages and more than 200 articles was signed by 90 UNITA deputies, indicating more than 200 documentary evidence and naming 40 citizens as witnesses.
At a press conference ahead of the proposal, the leader of the UNITA parliamentary group, Liberty Chiaka, said that according to the law, after the document is presented, the plenary session of the National Assembly must urgently meet to organize the process. .
The plenary will have to approve a resolution on the issue by secret ballot by a two-thirds majority of the deputies currently in power, with the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA, now in power) having the majority. seats in parliament.
If approved, the procedural motion must be sent to the Supreme Court for possible criminal proceedings and to the Constitutional Court to review compliance with the process considered by the National Assembly.
The completion of the process of resignation of the President of the Republic has absolute priority over any other matter of the National Assembly and must be completed within a maximum period of 120 days from the date of receipt of this initiative, Chiaka said.
This Saturday’s extraordinary plenary session precedes the opening of the parliamentary year on Monday, which will feature Angolan President João Lourenço’s State of the Nation address.
