French President Emmanuel Macron has refused to appoint a minority government of the New Popular Front, the left-wing alliance that won the legislature in July, with Lucie Castet as prime minister.
“A government based solely on the programme and parties proposed by the alliance with the largest number of deputies, the New Popular Front, would immediately be subject to a vote of censure by all the other groups represented in the National Assembly,” the French president explained in a statement.
Lucie Castet accuses the president of not taking into account the democratic choice of the French. “Anger. That’s what millions of people feel. Emmanuel Macron tells us that elections mean nothing. Does that mean that democracy means nothing to the president? That’s extremely dangerous,” he said. The left-wing coalition parties have already refused to participate in new meetings with the president, called for demonstrations and said they would announce a “resignation proposal” for the head of state.
