A 35-year-old man suffered burns this Monday in an industrial accident at the Galp oil refinery in Sines (Setubal district) and was taken to the intensive care unit at a Lisbon hospital, firefighters and hospital sources said.
In a report by the Lusa agency, representatives of the Subregional Command for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection of Alentejo explained that the victim suffered “burns to some parts of the body” as a result of “an explosion of a compressor at an oil refinery.”
Firefighters were alerted to the incident at 3:40 a.m. and the man was “assisted on scene by two nurses from the Gulp Refinery” and “two doctors from the refinery were also on site to assess the victim’s condition.” in a mild form,” he said, the same source.
The victim was taken by the Sines fire service to the Litoral Alentejuno Hospital (HLA), located in the neighboring municipality of Santiago do Cacem, the subregional civil protection command said, stressing that the incident ended at 5:00 am. .

A hospital source also told Lusa that the man was “transferred to the intensive care unit of the San José Hospital” in Lisbon early this morning and that he had “burns to his face, hands and respiratory tract.”
Six first responders were mobilized to the scene, supported by three vehicles, including firefighters, GNR and the National Institute of Emergency Medical Services, as well as their HLA ambulances and critical care vehicles.
The Galp refinery in Sines is on a planned shutdown throughout this month and next for maintenance work.
