The number of cruise passengers visiting Cape Verde rose 85% this year to September compared with the same period in 2022, according to data from state-owned company Enapor Cape Verde published in its latest statistical bulletin.
The total number of cruise passengers is 51,716, with the largest increase recorded in Porto Grande on the island of São Vicente, which has already received 17,879 more tourists than in 2022.
In Praia the increase was 9,400 visitors.
In just nine months of 2023, 71 passenger cruise ships have already passed through Cape Verde, all of foreign origin.
Cruise stops are one of the drivers of tourism, a sector that accounts for about 25% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
After a sharp decline during the Covid-19 pandemic, traffic has already recovered significantly in 2022 (from 11,066 passengers in 2021 to 60,742) and the growth trend continues, according to the latest ENAPOR data.
