Kavita Shah brings Cape Verdean blues to Portugal

It was while listening to Cesaria Evora that Kavita Shah discovered Cape Verdean music and soon became interested in exploring Cape Verde and its traditional music. The first trip took place several years ago, and in Cape Verde he met Bau, one of the great guitarists who worked with Cesaria. Together with Bau, Kavita began preparing the album, which she now presents: Cape Verdean Blues. A reference to North American jazz pianist of Cape Verdean descent, Horace Silver.

Kavita is a jazz singer, and in this album she makes connections between the music of her training and the traditional music of Cape Verde. A work including themes from musicians and composers who have left their mark on the history of Cape Verdean music. Boy Je Mendes, Vasco Martins or Morgadinho are some of them. Kavita sings songs like Sodade, Cize, Angola, Flor di Nha Esperança or Joia, among the twelve tracks that complement the album.

For the release of Cape Verdean Blues, Kavita Shah has three concerts planned in Portugal. First at CCB, Lisbon, November 1st. On the 2nd it will take place in Porto, at the Casa da Música, and on the 3rd in Lamego, at the Teatro Ribeiro Conceição. The singer will take the stage with guitarists Bau and Jorge Almeida, and N’Du on percussion. The same band that was at the Atlantic Music Expo in Cape Verde in April of this year.

Arriving in our country after a three-week tour of the USA and ten concerts. For Kavita, the tour was a success: “It went very well, the audience was delighted with Cape Verdean music. Some were fans, but many who didn’t know were very interested in the work we were doing,” the singer said. which in this tour, which passed through Boston, New York and Chicago, in addition to Bau and Jorge Almeida, took part Miroka Paris, also a participant in the recording of Cape Verdean Blues, which took place in the studios of Mindelo and Lisbon. “It was special to be able to share the music of Cape Verde with these incredible musicians. The audience was happy and so were we,” said the singer, who will return to Cape Verde to perform at the Ildo after the shows in Portugal. Palace of Culture Lobo in the city of Praia, as well as in the Cultural Center of Mindelo. The tour ends in December with a concert in Paris.
