The announcement of the decision in a case involving 96 defendants accused of online fraud that resulted in the theft of at least one million euros prompted the PSP to intervene at the Justice Campus in Lisbon.
Upon learning on Tuesday afternoon that he was among those convicted, one of the accused and his family insulted the judges. The police intervened and the accused left in handcuffs.
The network was dismantled by the judicial police in 2022. The group sent large numbers of emails to victims, leading them to believe that they were selling company shares. In fact, victims revealed their bank details in a “phishing” scam that netted the group at least one million euros. Luis Felicio, the leader, served 14 years in prison. Another six defendants were sentenced to terms ranging from 8 to 13 years in prison. A total of 89 defendants who provided the network with bank accounts to deposit money received three years’ probation.
