At least five construction workers were killed and several were missing Monday after scaffolding fell into a well during construction work in Hamburg, northern Germany, German authorities said.
The fire service of Germany’s second-largest city said the construction site had been evacuated after the accident, German news agency DPA reported, adding that several hundred workers had gathered outside.
The accident occurred in the Übersee district, part of the port city’s HafenCity district and is one of Hamburg’s most important construction projects.
HafenCity is a former port area on the Elbe River that is being developed with residential buildings, offices, hotels and shops.
