As announced today, the PNP arrested a 53-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman for stealing olives in the municipality of Vila Viçosa, Évora district, and confiscated 240 kilograms of the fruit.
A statement from the PPR territorial command in Évora indicated that the couple was detained on Saturday by soldiers of the Vila Viçosa territorial post of these security forces after a report of theft.
Guardsmen arrived on the scene and surprised the suspects when “they were picking olives without the owner’s permission,” so both were arrested on the spot, Guardsmen explained.
According to GNR, the couple had 240 kilograms of olives, which were seized and handed over to the rightful owner.
He added that in addition to the olives, the Guard soldiers also confiscated a car and utensils for collecting olives.
The detainees were found guilty and will also appear in court in Vila Viços.
The GNR is conducting Operation Campo Seguro 2023, which includes patrols, awareness raising and inspection activities to prevent property crimes in agricultural properties and strengthen policing to prevent and curb theft practices in agricultural fields.
