This Monday, the first baby in Europe conceived by two women using the Invocell method was born. The birth took place in the maternity ward of the Juaneda Miramar hospital in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, the hospital department said in a statement.
Derek was born weighing 3.3 kilograms and completely healthy. The Invocell method allowed mothers Azahara, 27, and Estefania, 30, to share embryonic development.
According to the Juaneda Miramar Hospital, the system works like a “small incubator” that is placed under the cervix of one of the women, allowing the development of the embryo to occur within the body for the first few days. rather than happening in the laboratory.
After development, the system is removed and the embryo is transferred to the uterus of another woman.
The whole process took place in March of this year and now culminates with the birth of Derek. The Spanish hospital was the first in Europe to successfully use this method.
The hospital statement also said the procedure “has great emotional value” because both mothers shared the baby’s pregnancy.
