Helena Souza is the first woman to chair the ERC Regulatory Council.

According to a published statement, this Friday Helena Souza was elected “by consensus” as President of the ERC Regulatory Council, becoming the first woman to head the Social Communications Regulatory Authority (ERC).

On October 25, Lusa announced that Helena Souza would chair the ERC Regulatory Council by consensus.

“The five members of the Regulatory Council of the Social Communications Regulatory Authority (ERC) this Friday, in accordance with the ERC Charter, proceeded to elect the President and Vice-President of the body,” the statement said.

Thus, the regulatory council “decided by consensus to elect Helena Souza as President” and “Pedro Correia Gonçalves was elected by majority to the role of Vice-President.”

The five members of the Regulatory Council – Maria Helena Costa de Carvalho y Sousa, Pedro Correia Gonçalves, Telmo António Freire Gonçalves da Silva, Carla Isabel Agostinho Martins and Rita Figueiredo Reis Rola – take office in Parliament next week, November 7, at 1 o’clock: 00 pm, before the President of the Assembly of the Republic.

The new ERC President has been a professor in the Department of Communication Sciences at Minho University since 2011. After receiving a PhD in Communication Policy (City University, London) in 1996, she coordinated and participated in national and international research. projects on media regulation, communication policy and journalism.

She is also the editor of the European Journal of Communication (Sage), a full member of the Euromedia research group and collaborates in this field with the Council of Europe and the European Audiovisual Observatory.

During her career, Helena Souza has been a PhD candidate in communication sciences, vice president and president of the Institute of Social Sciences (UMinho), co-coordinator of POLObs, the Observatory of Science, Communication and Cultural Policy, and president of the Cultural Council. from the University of Minho and also worked at the Jornal de Notícias in Porto from 1988 to 1991.

ERC Vice-President Pedro Correia Gonçalves received a degree in law from the Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Lisbon, as well as a master’s and doctorate in criminal law (criminal economic aspect) from the same institution.

In recent years, he has served as executive director of the ERC, is a university professor and the author of a number of specialized articles and monographic works, according to his curriculum vitae.

Telmo Gonçalves has been a senior technical specialist at the ERC since 2006, has held several management positions within the organization and holds a degree in Communication Sciences with a specialization in Journalism from Universidad Autónoma Luis de Camões.

He has been a professor of journalism and communication in higher education (Escola Superior de Comunicação Social and Escola Superior de Educação de Portalegre), holds a postgraduate degree in social sciences from the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon and a master’s degree in strategy. from the Institute of Social Sciences and Politics of the Technical University of Lisbon (2003).

Carla Martins holds a PhD and a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the Faculty of Arts of Coimbra, and a Doctorate in Communication Sciences with a specialization in Media and Journalism from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon.

She is an integrated researcher at ICNOVA, has national and international publications in the fields of media regulation, journalism and gender studies, and has been on the ERC staff since 2006, serving as Coordinator of the Media Transparency Unit since 2019.

Rita Rola is a graduate of the Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Porto and a Doctor of Law from the Faculty of Law and Labor of the University of Vigo, and is a professor at the Fernando Pessoa University and the Higher Institute of Business. and tourism sciences.

She is also the author of several national and international publications and a lawyer registered with the Bar from 2005 to date.
