The mayor of Povoa de Varzim, Porto district, this Saturday denounced the “environmental crime” of the operation of a landfill in the neighboring municipality of Barcelos, pointing to the illegal dumping of unrecycled waste.
“What is happening at this landfill is a failure of civilization and an environmental crime. They dump waste without any sorting or treatment directly into a landfill. Those in charge cannot turn a blind eye to this,” Aires Pereira told Agência Lusa.
The mayor of Povoa de Varzim assured that the situation was recorded in photographs that have since been published on the social networks of the parish council of Laundos, a village adjacent to the landfill, whose population has been complaining since last year of “a sickening smell.”
“Other than the problem of odors, which are a major nuisance to the community, this landfill does nothing to contribute to the environmental goals we are all committed to regarding recycling regulations. Dumping unprocessed waste in the 21st century is unacceptable and contrary to all recycling rules. rules,” added Aires Pereira.
The mayor of Povoa de Varzina assured that this dismissal will lead to “a new official communication to the competent authorities such as the Ministry of the Environment, the Northern Regional Commission for Coordination and Development (CCDR-N) and the General Inspectorate of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial planning (IGAMAOT).”
“These organizations need to take action. The way this landfill is being managed is unacceptable,” said Aires Pereira.
The landfill, located in the Barcelona district of Paradela, Braga district, is managed by the company Resulima, responsible for collecting waste in the municipalities of Arcos de Valdeves, Barcelos, Esposende, Ponte da Barca, Ponte de Lima and Viana do Castelo .
The equipment was commissioned in early 2022 but has since sparked protests from residents in the neighboring parishes of Rathes and Laundos, who complain of a “sickening smell” in the area, citing activity. landfills.
