Cape Verde will respond to 159 recommendations and confirm its candidacy for membership of the UN Human Rights Council at the universal periodic review meeting on Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland.
“Cape Verde places particular emphasis on human rights, making a strong commitment to their promotion, respect and strengthening of the democratic rule of law and the fundamental freedoms of its people. In this regard, the country intends to nominate its candidacy for membership of the Human Rights Council for the period 2025-2027,” says the report submitted by the government to the review group and prepared jointly with civil society and various organizations.
The Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights is a United Nations mechanism to which countries regularly submit.
Cape Verde will be assessed for the fourth time by the UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (EPU) working group.
Previous assessments were carried out in October 2011, November 2016 and May 2018.
The third review resulted in 159 recommendations to which the Cape Verde report will respond, with the document to be presented by Justice Minister Joana Rosa at a meeting to be held from 7:00 to 10:30 in Cape Verde. Verde (from 8:00 to 11:30 in Lisbon).
In an extensive list, Joana Rosa will present the steps taken by Cape Verde, for example at the legislative level, but also at the level of practical measures in terms of gender equality and the protection of vulnerable groups.
Following the completion of the fourth assessment, the EPU task force is expected to adopt new recommendations on Friday.
The Human Rights Council, to which Cape Verde has announced its intention to apply, is an intergovernmental body of 47 states responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights around the world.
Its members are elected by the UN General Assembly for a term of three years and meet three times a year in Geneva.
