The President of the Republic of Mozambique this Monday reiterated the need for a “credible, efficient and transparent” justice system in the country, noting that good name and reputation are not for sale as the 20th anniversary of the Constitutional Council (CC) is celebrated. ).
“We need an effective and transparent institutional system that guarantees us that the just, the raped and the abused will not be defeated. Justice cannot have early decisions, people and society must believe in justice,” said Filipe Nyusi during a ceremony to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Constitutional Council (CC) of Mozambique in Maputo.
The head of state of Mozambique said that the authority of justice “is not a given” and “is not the final achievement”, noting that there is always a struggle between “good and evil, between corruption and moral integrity”, but that the law must prevail .
“Our courts may look good and be well equipped, our judges may wear their most formal robes, but all this will be useless if our justice system does not inspire confidence, if our judges are not respected,” the President emphasized.
Congratulating the CC on its 20th anniversary, Nyusi also said Mozambique’s justice system must ensure, “through honesty and transparency”, that truth and justice will always prevail.
“For [as pessoas] believe in [na Justiça] they must see how crime is punished, how good wins, they must know that you will win a case not because you are rich or powerful, you must know to the same extent that it is not because you are poor or weak that you should be attributed to reason,” said the statesman.
Filipe Nyusi made these statements as the results of the sixth local elections, held on October 11, are expected to be confirmed and declared by the Constitutional Council, the country’s highest judicial body.
Local elections in Mozambique have been heavily criticized by various opposition parties and civil society, who have denounced “massive fraud” of ballot papers, focusing on the falsification of notifications, with some district court decisions admitting irregularities in the process.
The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, is holding marches to contest the October 11 election results, uniting thousands of people in different parts of the country to demand the “restoration of electoral truth.”
Clashes between authorities and protesters in various parts of the country, especially in the cities of Nampula, Nacala Porto and Maputo, resulted in arrests and injuries to several others.
The President of Mozambique and the President of the CoP, Lucia Ribeiro, did not speak about post-election tensions in Mozambique.
Results presented by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) of Mozambique indicate a victory for the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), the party in power, in 64 of the country’s 65 municipalities, while the MDM won only in Beira.
Mozambique’s sixth municipal elections took place on October 11 in 65 municipalities across the country, including 12 new municipalities that went to vote for the first time.
