Admiral Lee Si-ming, Taiwan’s former vice minister of defense, advocated the mobilization and training of the Taiwanese population in the Lusa agency to counter the “imminent” Chinese invasion through asymmetric warfare tactics.
“We have to break free from traditional thinking in terms of defense,” said Li Si-ming, who is also a research fellow at the Project 2049 Institute, a think tank in Washington, noting that the island of almost 24 million inhabitants must maintain “combat readiness” in the face of a conflict he considers “inevitable”.
In an interview with Lusa on the campus of National Chengchi University in southern Taipei, the military acknowledged Taiwan’s increased defense and security concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and stressed the importance of betting on asymmetric warfare strategies to counter a potential Chinese offensive.
