The Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) presented this Monday to the country’s parliament a proposal for an amnesty for people involved in Catalonia’s attempt at self-determination, which culminated in the unilateral declaration of independence in 2017.
The proposal is the result of agreements signed between the PSOE and two Catalan parties that, in exchange for an amnesty, will allow the creation of a new left-wing government in Spain after legislative elections on July 23.
Socialist leader and minister Félix Bolaños said this Monday that the proposal has the support of seven parties, not just the PSOE and the Catalans, and that it will be approved in the coming weeks by an absolute majority of 178 votes of the Congress of Deputies.
