Republican Kevin McCarthy was elected this morning the leader of the US House of Representatives, overcoming resistance in the ranks of the party itself.
After four days of voting, McCarthy managed to convince more than a dozen Conservatives, after the 14th attempt, on Friday night, that they had failed the election by just one vote.
McCarthy had to give in to some demands, including restoring a long-standing rule in the lower house of Congress that allowed any member to ask for a vote to remove him from office, which could make the Republican an already weakened leader, not only for giving up some power, but above all for the constant threat of being displaced by ill-wishers.
