Mercadona President Juan Roig said this Thursday that if the political climate seen in Spain is repeated in Portugal, where the group is expanding, the supermarket chain will “slow down investment”.
According to EFE and Europa Press, Roig called on the Spanish political class to remain calm and “not put obstacles in the way,” while he warned of a division among Spaniards “that is not good for the economy or the economy.” or Spain.” .
Roig made these statements before speaking at a forum on the Mediterranean Corridor, which took place this Thursday in Madrid and coincided with the debate on the appointment of socialist Pedro Sánchez as prime minister in the Spanish parliament.
Roig said businessmen and workers “are the ones who create the country’s wealth and jobs” and insisted that a “system of stability” was needed.
“If we had the same problem as in Spain, in Portugal, where Mercadona is expanding, we would slow down investment, and that can’t happen,” he said.
The Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) had the second largest vote in the July 23 legislative elections, and Sánchez was appointed prime minister with the support of a “cunning device” of left and right, regionalist, nationalist and independent formations.
The agreements that the PSOE signed with the two Catalan parties have been at the center of controversy and protests because they include an amnesty for people involved in the Catalan independence movement between 2012 and 2023, which culminated in a unilateral declaration of independence in October. 2017.
The amnesty is being contested by the right and several organizations and sectors, including associations of judges and prosecutors, who warn of the potential for an attack on the separation of powers, the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law.
