A 41-year-old man has been arrested by the Judicial Police (PJ) for the Ola Pai/Ola Mae WhatsApp scam. According to the SP, a search warrant was executed at the home, which culminated in the flagrant arrest of a foreign national for the crime of qualified fraud.
“Seven modems were seized from the suspect, which connected 32 SIM cards to each device, that is, they simultaneously worked with 224 cards,” the report says.
“The investigation revealed the massive use of cards, as evidenced by the fact that thousands of cards were confiscated, more than seven thousand cards were not used, and more than one thousand five hundred were already used in criminal practices,” explains the joint venture.
Thus, the man was able to send thousands of messages with already known arguments for the scheme and interact with third parties online to carry out fraud in the country and in other countries.
Authorities have received more than 200 complaints involving amounts that total more than 100 thousand euros.
The victims of the scheme are mainly elderly people who believe they are talking to their children who are experiencing financial difficulties or need urgent payments. Parents were willing to make transfers immediately, and in some cases for amounts reaching thousands of euros.
The detainee will be brought to the competent judicial authorities to apply appropriate coercive measures.
