The head of German diplomacy today made an unexpected visit to Kharkiv, in the north-east of Ukraine. It was the first visit by a senior Western official to a plague-stricken city close to the Russian border, the German government said Tuesday.
The statement from the German Foreign Ministry emphasizes that Annalena Burbock was invited by her colleague “and friend” Dmytro Kuleba, saying back in Kharkiv that the Ukrainian population “can count” on Germany’s “support and solidarity” in regards to the supply of generators , transformers, fuel or blankets to get through the harsh winter.
“This city is a symbol of the absolute madness of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and the endless suffering that people, especially here in the east of the country, face every day,” the minister said.
