The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) detained five people and confiscated 156 slot machines in an operation against illegal gambling carried out in the municipalities of Évora, Beja and Ferreira do Alentejo, it was announced on Wednesday.
The ASAE statement indicated that this inspection operation, aimed at sellers and distributors of gambling, was carried out in recent weeks by the southern regional unit, the operational unit of Évora, of this body.
According to the ASAE, five people were arrested in connection with the crime for “programming game materials in digital format” and five criminal charges were filed for using the games outside of legally permitted locations.
According to him, in addition to the arrests and initiation of criminal proceedings, a “secret place where illegal gambling materials were stored” was also eliminated.
“Also, 156 slot machines, a vehicle used to distribute illegal gaming materials, various components and tools, as well as documentation indicating the commission of criminal offenses were seized,” ASAE said.
According to the department, the estimated value of the seized material is 160 thousand euros.
