The European Commission announced this Friday a package of 15 million euros for humanitarian support for the people of Syria and Lebanon, including refugees in the most vulnerable situations.
In a statement, Brussels announced “€15 million in humanitarian aid for the most vulnerable people in Syria and Lebanon, including refugees and Lebanese in need.”
Of the announced amount, 11.5 million euros are intended for Syria, and the remaining 3.5 million euros for Lebanon.
The €15 million is earmarked for food aid, sanitation, water and hygiene support, and to cover “the needs of Syrians within the country, as well as refugees and the most vulnerable in Lebanon.”
The European Commission’s support comes at a time when tensions in the Middle East have risen and the diplomatic situation between Arab states and Israel has deteriorated following the launch of an Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip against the Islamist movement Hamas.
Hamas launched an October 7 attack into Israel, considered the largest attack on the Jewish population since World War II, kidnapping more than 200 people.
The next day, Tel Aviv launched an operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, territory controlled by the Islamist movement.
But the ongoing bombings and the deaths of more than 10,000 people in just four weeks, including thousands of children, have sparked a wave of protest, including within Israel, over the handling of military operations by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
