The election for the presidency of the National Union of Prison Guards (SNCGP) ended in confusion this Thursday, with one of the three competing lists refusing to accept the results.
Jorge Alves, leader of the SNCGP for 12 years and who, after losing the 2020 elections, returned to this year’s elections, was declared the winner. The recorded difference was five votes for List C, headed by Frederico Morais, who is a member of the current board of directors.
However, the last ballot box, related to the Aveiro prison, was opened only at 23:30, almost 4 hours after voting closed throughout the country.

At that time, Frederico Morais was in the lead. But after Aveiro’s 25 votes were counted, Jorge Alves emerged victorious.
List C, led by Frederico Morais, is expected to formally challenge the results soon, unhappy with the late opening of the ballot box and claiming that the Aveiro election record was erased with several errors.
The complaint, which is filed within 10 days, will be considered by the SNCGP Election Commission. This body consists of the chairman of the board of the general assembly of the trade union and representatives of the three electoral lists.
