Argentine President-elect Javier Milley will not meet with US President Joe Biden during his visit to Washington, but will meet with White House chief diplomatic adviser Jake Sullivan.
The agenda was announced this Monday at a press conference by John Kirby, one of the White House representatives, who explained that Biden will not be able to meet with the Argentine politician, since he is scheduled to travel this Tuesday to the State of Georgia, for the funeral of former first lady Rosalynn Carter, wife of former President Jimmy Carter (1977–1981).
After the funeral, Biden will travel to Colorado, where he has several events planned for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Kirby explained that Miley will meet with Sullivan, whose official title is White House national security adviser and, along with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, is responsible for developing the administration’s foreign policy.
Miley could also potentially meet with other members of the White House National Security Council, said Kirby, who did not specify whether that list could include Biden’s senior adviser on Latin America, Juan Gonzalez.
“We will have to see how everything develops. Unfortunately, the president will not be able to see him, since he will be traveling within the country. But, obviously, we want to continue to look for ways to cooperate with Argentina,” the press secretary assured. .
“Argentina is an active partner on this continent on many issues. “We look forward to hearing the President-elect’s ideas and seeing where he wants to go on policy issues while ensuring we have the opportunity to keep that line of communication open,” he added. .
Ultra-liberal candidate Javier Miley defeated Peronist Sergio Massa in the second round of the presidential elections held on November 19 in Argentina.
The leader of La Libertad Avanza, which defines itself as an “anarcho-capitalist” extreme form of liberalism advocating a stateless capitalist society, will take office as Argentina’s head of state on December 10.
Miley traveled to New York early Sunday morning and visited the grave of Rabbi Schneerson at the Montefiore Jewish Cemetery that Monday.
After this visit, Miley headed to Washington, where he intends to hold meetings at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the White House and the Ministry of Finance, sources in the future Argentine government say.
Following her electoral triumph, Miley spoke by phone with Biden and former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), who could challenge the incumbent North American president in the 2024 US presidential election.
According to an official statement from Milea’s office, Trump plans to meet with the Argentine in Buenos Aires.
Miley spoke on Friday with Kristalina Georgieva, director general of the IMF, to which Argentina owes $46 billion.
The Washington-based organization, in its first official contact with the president-elect, pledged to “support efforts” to address Argentina’s serious macroeconomic imbalances.
