Former Secretary of State for Sports became the subject of PJ investigation

This Tuesday, the Judicial Police (PJ) is carrying out nine searches at home and outside in Lisbon and Viseu, namely at the premises of the company, the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth, the Portuguese Red Cross, the Tondela-Viseu Hospital Center and the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge.

João Paulo Rebelo, the former Secretary of State for Sports, is one of the defendants in the case, although he has not yet been named as a defendant, according to the report observer. Information published on the website of the Prosecutor’s Office (PO) states that the investigation “is aimed at obtaining evidence related to facts that may constitute crimes related to economic participation in business and abuse of power by persons holding political positions, as well as as a usurpation of functions.”

We are talking about a public contract from 2019 by direct award within the framework of the “PRID Project – Sports Infrastructure Rehabilitation Program” for the acquisition of engineering services with a person who is not legally qualified to perform activities arising from this profession and, on the other hand, of suspicion in supporting government procurement for Covid-19 test analyses.

The investigation involves 60 inspectors and experts of the judicial police, a representative of the Order of Physicians, five specialists from the Technical Advisory Center of the General Prosecutor’s Office, five magistrates of the prosecutor’s office and two criminal judges.
