Supreme Court Justice (STJ) President Enrique Araujo on Tuesday said it was necessary to “unite” with the Portuguese-speaking territories in promoting the adoption of technology “so that justice works in all of them.”
“We must unite and try to provide conditions for the introduction of technology in these territories, in these countries, so that justice works in all of them,” he said in an interview with Agência Lusa on the sidelines of the conference. 11th Forum of Chief Justices of Lusophone Countries and Territories.
The Consulting Judge and President of STJ stated that “the panorama of judicial lusophonia is diverse.”
“In Portugal we have a system that works almost perfectly in terms of electronic processing and digitization, and in Brazil it also works great.”
On the other hand, he said, some Portuguese-speaking countries are still “far behind in relation to what is already common, for example in Portugal, namely electronic processing and digitalization.”
“In Timor-Leste there are huge problems with the use of the Internet because there are no structures that provide access to the Internet,” and in Sao Tome and Principe the problems are related to energy supply, he explained, and that is why there are difficulties with electronic processing and digitization.
Henrique Araujo, at the headquarters of the Supreme Court in Brasilia, praised Brazil’s work in this field, especially in the field of artificial intelligence, specifying that the Brazilian authorities told him that 50 million euros had been invested this year in computing system maintenance and artificial intelligence alone.
“We already have Brazil with the introduction of advanced technologies, including in the field of artificial intelligence,” he emphasized.
“Portugal is now embarking on this issue,” he said, recalling that the STJ has already completed a project on the anonymization of sentences and court decisions, submitted to the Judicial Council, so that “this tool can be used.”
