The National Federation of Doctors (Fnam) on Tuesday rejected a salary agreement with the Ministry of Health, deeming it a “bad deal for doctors” and the National Health Service (SNS).
“FNAM does not accept the agreement, the proposal that was made by the Ministry of Health, because it is a bad agreement for doctors, it is a bad agreement for the National Health Service, it will not allow doctors to settle in the SNA. “, said Fnam President Joana Bordalo i Sa after meeting with the head at the Ministry of Health in Lisbon.
In a statement, the government announced the end of negotiations, citing an interim agreement with the Independent Union of Doctors (SIM).
Joana Bordalo y Sa insisted that Fnam fight for a salary increase that would be “fair for all doctors”, rejecting the guardianship proposal, which includes different percentage increases depending on categories.
“What the government presented to us was a maximum renewal of 15% and completely discretionary depending on the type of doctor. So 40-hour doctors will have a certain type of renewal, 42-hour full-time doctors much less, 35 hours even less, so that’s completely unacceptable,” he said.
According to the FNAM president, the federation came to the meeting with a proposal for a temporary increase of 30%, but admitted to lowering it.
“We even brought it down to 22%, 23% to get closer to what we thought was possible and budgeted for by the state,” referring to a table regarding the base salary of full-time doctors that has since been published .
“However, there was no such flexibility, there was no meeting on the part of the government regarding Fnam’s demands,” he complained, adding that only salary issues were on the table and that the guardianship “did not show the slightest flexibility in addressing Fnam’s demands.” Fnam’s remaining demands relate to daily and weekly working hours, emergency hours and holiday replacement, the latter without “any budgetary implications”.
Joana Bordalo e Sa insisted that the executive’s proposal was a “bad deal for doctors and SNS” and denied that Fnam could be “responsible for a bad deal” that would lead to more doctors leaving SNS and which it would not do more young doctors. want to stay.
“What new doctors must accept is an unfair and undignified pay scale, and a new regime of total dedication which is illegal, has unconstitutional aspects and requires an increase in overtime to 250 hours, which requires a medieval increase in the daily working day to nine hours, with the cessation of compensatory rest after the doctor has worked the night and, obviously, this is not what young doctors want, despite the desire to remain in the SNS, the conditions are not offered by this government,” he criticized.
Fnam, as the president of the structure assured, will continue to fight “for better working conditions and fair wages.”
“Be it with this government or the next,” he concluded.
