Venezuelans have voted in favor of President Nicolas Maduro’s government’s intention to annex Venezuela’s Esequibo territory disputed with neighboring Guyana, the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced.
“[Foi] a clear and overwhelming victory for “yes” in the consultative referendum on Esequibo,” CNE President Elvis Amoroso said this Sunday, highlighting that 10,554,320 votes were cast in the popular poll.
According to the CNE, 97.83% of the votes answered positively to the first question, agreeing “at all costs, in accordance with the law, to the fraudulent line imposed by the decision of the Paris Arbitration of 1899,” while 2.17% voted against.
“The people have spoken loudly and clearly, and we are going to start a new and powerful phase, because we have the mandate of the people, we have the voice of the people,” Nicolas Maduro said.
