The Sao Tome Judicial Police (PJ) detained a man and confiscated 80 kilograms of cannabis in an operation called “zero smoke” aimed at combating the cultivation, consumption and commercialization of the plant, the police organization said on Tuesday.
The operation began on Monday with searches and seizures in some locations in the districts of Agua Grande and Mesochi due to a “series of crimes” related to the use of the substance, according to the deputy director of the Sao Tome Judicial Police. , better known in the archipelago as “liamba”.
“In our city, countless streets are currently unsafe because people are consuming (…) they have normalized this practice, and the PS, concerned about this situation, has launched an operation called “zero smoke”, in the sense of combating the cultivation , the sale and excessive consumption of liamba,” said Lusa D’Jamila Braganza.
The SP spokesman said that on the first day of searches and seizures, a “person identified as a person who grows and consumes” cannabis “associated with the crime of sexual violence” was arrested, and 80 kilograms of plants were confiscated in four communities: one in the Agua region Grande and three in Me-Sochi.
“Other people managed to escape, but the police will do everything possible to bring these people to justice and answer for the crimes they commit, namely the cultivation of psychotropic substances/liamba,” said D’Jamila Braganza.
“The PS will not give any respite to the producers and traders of the above-mentioned substance. We will not have weapons that can be measured, we will do everything possible through legislation to combat the cultivation, sale and consumption,” added the person in charge.
Braganza stressed that “the police do not work alone”, so he asked “people who feel uncomfortable in the sphere of consumption, sales” and know information related to the crime to “share information with the judicial police”, who are ready to “work to ensure the safety of the population and put an end to the placement and sale of psychotropic substances in the country.
