British Foreign Secretary David Cameron this Thursday, during a visit to Washington, addressed the US Congress with a request to approve a new budget package for Ukraine.
“I am not concerned about the strength, unity, consensus and courage of the Ukrainian people (…) What worries me is that we are not doing what is necessary,” Cameron said at a security forum in the US capital.
“We have to ensure that we give them weapons, economic support, moral support, diplomatic support, but above all, military support that can make a difference,” he added at the Aspen Security Forum.
David Cameron is taking part in his first trip to the United States since becoming Foreign Secretary. Negotiations with the head of American diplomacy Antony Blinken are still scheduled for this Thursday.
The US Congress failed on Wednesday to move forward with a massive $106 billion-plus package requested by President Joe Biden that includes funds for Ukraine and Israel.
The setback was a disappointment to Joe Biden, who called for the funds to be approved in a speech on Wednesday.
“We have to send this money to the Ukrainians,” defended David Cameron, adding: “We have to support them and make sure that it is Putin who loses, because if this money is not voted for, there are only two people who will smile: Vladimir Putin in Russia and Xi Jinping in Beijing. As for you, I don’t know, but I don’t want to give them a Christmas present.”
