The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS), led by Luis Almagro, classified on Thursday as “illegal and illegitimate” the referendum on the Essequibo region called by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Almagro’s office in a statement condemned the Venezuelan government’s “aggressive stance” toward Guyana and said growing tensions between the two countries are a “regional security concern” and threaten “stability and territorial sovereignty” on the continent.
The referendum, in which the majority of citizens who took part voted for Essequibo to join Venezuela, represents “once again” Maduro’s “anti-democratic” use of “democratic processes”, the statement said.
