President of Cape Verde asks for conditions to prevent and support migrants arriving in Cape Verde

Cape Verdean President José María Neves asked this Monday for the creation of conditions to prevent and monitor the arrival of migrants after a pirogue carrying 92 people arrived in Boa Vista on Saturday.

“Now it is necessary to mobilize civil society and all local authorities to help these people. In fact, the mayor is already leading this process, and the support of the government is also needed in order to help those people who have come. it is more important to create conditions to prevent future arrivals,” José María Neves said in a message published Monday on his official Facebook account.

A pie containing 92 African migrants, two of whom died, washed ashore Saturday on the island of Boa Vista in Cape Verde, the mayor of the local council told Lusa on Sunday.

“They practically died on the shore. It was a dramatic situation,” Boa Vista Mayor Claudio Mendonsa said, indicating that the ship would leave the Gambia on December 24 for Spain.

“They got lost between Morocco and Mauritania, they ran out of fuel and ended up on the coast of Boa Vista,” he explained.

In a message this Monday, referring to having already spoken to the mayor of Boa Vista, the Cape Verdean head of state said he was “closely following” the case, emphasizing that “everyone should be aware of the need” to give “all support and all kinds of help” to people who arrive in the country in such a situation.

“In September, he also washed ashore [na Boa Vista] pie for eight people. These people have already returned to their countries of origin, and now, in January, 90 more people are arriving, indicating that more pies or accidents may be arriving here, near Cape Verde. Therefore, it is important that we create ways to prevent and monitor such situations,” added José María Neves.

According to the latest review by the Boa Vista Chamber, there are 56 migrants from Senegal, 26 from Gambia, five from Guinea-Bissau, one from Sierra Leone, one from Guinea-Conakry and one from Mali.

Of the 90 rescued immigrants, 15 minors aged 14 to 17, 81 have been placed in the Seixal Municipal Pavilion, Sal Rei, Boa Vista, and nine people, including the only three women in the group, are being treated.

Pirogou was noticed by the lighthouse keeper on duty at Morro Negro, in the north of the island, more than 30 kilometers from the capital of Sal Rei, in the south, around 16:00 local time (17:00 in Lisbon) 19:00. Saturday.

However, it was only later confirmed that the ship was carrying African migrants, and the lighthouse keeper traveled several kilometers to ask for support in a nearby village, said the mayor, who oversaw and coordinated operations on the ground. .

Two migrants who died on arrival in Boa Vista were buried on Saturday, six are being treated in a hospital and 84 have been temporarily housed in the Seixal Municipal Pavilion, Claudio Mendonza said.

“It was a very difficult logistics, we are all working together, the civil protection services, the police, the population and even the hotels that help us,” the mayor told Luce.

“This is critical, because less than three months ago we had the same situation. Over a hundred migrants washed up on the coast of Boa Vista in more than three months. We need to sort this out,” the mayor urged.
